ALBEISA:
A WOOD OF 4,000 TREES AND A WORK OF ART TO CELEBRATE 40 YEARS OF THE BOTTLE THAT IS A SYMBOL OF THE LANGHE
Alba-born artist Valerio Berruti has designed the bottle awarded to the ambassadors of the wines of the Langhe around the world. And the Albeisa Wood will be planted in order to promote protection of the environment.
By establishing a new wood of over 4,000 trees, thus expressing a care for the environment that one also finds in the weight of the bottle: that is how the Albeisa association, well-known all over the world thanks in part to the unmistakable bottle that symbolizes it, will celebrate its first 40 years; it will plant a tree for every 1,000 lightweight containers used in 2012. The Albeisa bottle, which boasts a history that dates back as far as the 18th century, has been produced since 2007 partly in a version whose weight is around 30% less than that of the traditional model. This change has translated itself into a lesser quantity of energy and of raw materials being used in the production of the glass, as well as an appreciable reduction in CO2 emissions and in waste. The producers have put this project into action with ever-greater conviction, to the extent that they have gone from 1,119,174 units produced in 2007 to the 4,266,828 lightweight Albeisa bottles filled in 2012.
By the end of 2013 an Albeisa wood will be planted with over 4,000 trees, one for every 1,000 low-environment-impact containers used last year. The first 230 trees will be personalized with the names of the companies that belong to the Association.
But there are also other initiatives being promoted by the Langhe’s producers in order to celebrate the “birthday” of their association in an original way. Thanks to the creativity of Valerio Berruti, a limited series of just 350 bottles has been transformed into works of art with a metallic bas-relief representing the profile of a little girl, which has become the hallmark of this young local artist. Two versions have been made: 270 in stainless steel, reserved for the members of Albeisa, and 80 pieces in gold-plated stainless steel, which will be donated to the 40 Italian establishments and 40 international ones that, thanks to their hard work, have become veritable “Ambassadors” for Albeisa in various countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, Norway, Holland, Poland, U.S.A., Czech Republic, Singapore and Switzerland.
“Raising the bottle itself to the status of a work of art – with the added value and elegance that entails – makes the role that Albeisa occupies in our area even more important and prestigious,” states Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo, Chairman of the Association. “In fact, it represents a territorial identity that few zones can boast; this celebratory version has the aim of reinforcing a sense of belonging amongst the members – who have become ever more numerous – but also of making our project better known around the world. And since the protection of the environment is undoubtedly a quality that makes us stand out, it seemed to us only right to give a signal in this sphere as well. The Albeisa Wood – just like the bottle – will therefore, represent to some extent the message we want to convey, as well as our culture and our pride”.

WHAT IS ALBEISA?
Albeisa is a non-profit association whose principal objective is the promotion of - and creating added value for - the wines of the Alba area. Nebbiolo Prima, the international pre-release tasting of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero, organised in conjunction with the Producers’ Consortium, is the association’s main annual event. The Unione Produttori Vini Albesi (Union of Alba Wine Producers) is the body that controls the use of the Albeisa bottle, with a constant commitment to spread its use whilst respecting a precise set of rules: it represents some 230 members and 13 million bottles.
